It is located in the Sierra del Oro mountain range where the hermitage of the same name has traditionally stood. The original hermitage, which was enlarged and improved, was the work of Father Yelo Templado, who sought to build a construction that would allow the patron saint to have a house of prayer. Yelo's project involved the construction of an adjoining religious residence, which would guarantee the care of worship and the ornamentation of the temple and its surroundings.
It is an isolated two-storey building with an entrance porch and bell gable. The interior houses a large number of images, the main altarpiece with the image of the Virgen del Oro, patron saint of Abarán, and the chapel on the Epistle side, with several pieces of sculpture and painting. Other images are distributed in different chapels and niches that open onto the side naves or are located in the offering room.
