Carnival festivities had in Cartagena a deep root, especially in the second half of the XIX century, although it was given up when it was banned at the end of the Spanish Civil War.

With the restoration of democracy and especially from the 1981, this profane festivity was recovered. Besides, nowadays it is declared as event of Regional Tourist Interest and is one of the most important events within the whole festive period.

During the celebration of the event, parades, dances and costume and "chirigotas" (group that sings humorous and satirical songs during Carnival) competitions are held, and each year the participation of natives of Cartagena and visitors is bigger.
